INTRODUCING THE MAY 10, 2014 STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

THE LEADER AS AN EAGLE
By Mark & Sharon Ighile

It is possible to be in a crowd and still stand out. It is not out of place to belong to a group and still be outstanding. There can be a striking voice even in the market place. An individual can become the show piece of an enlarged family. It is not a phenomenon out of the blues to generate a ringing tone among a cacophony of voices. The eagle is one of such special creatures that are unique in many respects in the destiny-cluster of possibilities. In the May edition of the 2014 strategic leadership summit, we shall be drawing revelation and inspiration from the leadership instructions of this divine construct.
There are many characteristics and feature that make the eagle worthy of attention and concentration. And we will consider a few of them within the context of leadership and management lifestyle. They include high flight, strength, vision, strategy and disciplined training.
Birds naturally fly, but the eagle’s flight is a strategic one. It has been established by research and experience that it is possible for eagles to fly beyond the altitude of 10.000 feet above sea level. By such advantageous exploit, the eagle lives in a class and world of its own. By the same token, every true leader is expected to be unstoppable in the journey of destiny. There is no height that a leader cannot attain if he sees God as his benchmark.
The in-built sight capacity of the eagle is awesome. With its highly powered eyes, it can see through the thick and thin. The eagle is never taken unawares because it sees danger from a far distance and knows how to avert it. Instructively, a core aspect of leadership is rooted \on vision. It entails the process of generating a clear picture of a positive future. Those who lead do so because they know the way forward. Every true leader is a visionary. Every great leader is a dreamer. Nothing sustains a leadership lifestyle like vision. Where there is vision the led are not only happy, but they are also free from danger (Prov. 29: 18).
An eagle does not act on impulse, neither does it respond to fear by flying aimlessly. It is calculated and courageous. When a storm comes and other birds fly away, the eagle spreads its wings to soar to greater heights. Rather than bows to situational trepidation, the eagle takes advantage of the same natural phenomenon that others dread. No wonder therefore, that God had to repeatedly command the new generational leader, Joshua, to be bold and courageous. For a leader to be a dependable example he must overcome the fear that his followers are still struggling with. The saying is true that if the lion’s share must be given to the leader, it is contingent on him to also possess the lion’s heart.
The eagle is a strong bird that continually renews itself for timeless relevance. As energetic as an eagle may be, it finds time to restructure and repackage itself. When the eagle gets to the age of 30, the natural abilities begin to ebb. So, it retreats to a mountaintop and over a five month period goes through a process of knocking off knocks off its own beak by banging it against a rock, plucking out its talons and feathers and the positions itself e for another 40 years. Every great leader should learn a lesson from this pattern- of constant scriptural refreshing and patterning of life after that of Jesus!
The eagle is a trainer and careful developer. This quality comes to the fore in the upbringing of the eaglets. When the eaglet is ripe to be trained to fly, the mother eagle spreads the wings and flies very high with the eaglet. But somewhere in the sky, the eaglet is left alone, and just before it crashes on the ground, the mother eagle comes to the rescue. This process is repeated until the desired maturity is realized. The leader is required to do no less. He is not expected to boss and rule the followers as autocratic statutes. But rather, it is required of him to grow with the people he is leading. He teaches and guides the people with every sense of responsibility and integrity. The empowerment and the direction that led enjoy from the leader become very handy in times of challenge and victory.
As we prepare for this summit, which is the eight edition in our sixth year of ministry, we are trusting God to use the forum to do the following: 1. Give illumination to the secrets of top flyers in human endeavour. 2. Exposure to the strategies of overall flight in life and ministry. 3. Draw inspiration from the eagle’s lifestyle which is critical to transformational leadership. 4. Supernatural empowerment for strategic flight.
Beloved, our heritage is surely at the topmost height. It will therefore amount to an abuse of redemption to remain on the ground.
You are welcome to a new day!

Report From the MAY 2013 Leadership Summit

MAY 2013 STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
By Daniel Olowookere

The Principal of the Redeemed School of Missions Ede Pastor Joel Oke has stressed the place of commitment, humility, forgiveness, holiness, integrity, faithfulness and wisdom in attaining greatness in life and ministry. Pastor Joel who delivered a lecture entitled “The Mystery of Greatness” at the bi-annual Strategic Leadership Summit, which held at the Redeemer’s University Chapel, International Office Complex, Redemption Camp, on Saturday May 13, 2013, noted that greatness cannot be micro-waved, adding that it is a mystery that can be accessed by patience, keenness and a godly lifestyle.
Earlier in his introductory address, the convener of the summit and president of the Strategic Leadership Academy, Dr. Mark Osama Ighile, observed that in a society that has zero tolerance for process; a nation where gimmicks rather than leadership principles are celebrated, a community that applauds results not minding how there were realised, there was need to focus on a brand of greatness that is propelled by Christ-like leadership qualities. While anchoring his speech on Gen. 24:27, Prov. 4:18 and Prov. 14 12, Dr. Ighile stressed the responsibilities of leaders on the path to greatness and amplified the place of grace in destiny realization.
Professor L.B. Kolawole, former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Akure, who represented the Vice Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Professor Debo Adeyewa at the event, articulated the leadership qualities of the convener and drew the attention of the audience to the sensitive role of a credible leader, stressing that if a leader goes astray, his followers would naturally tag along.
Dr Dare Ajayi, Senior lecturer and former director of higher degrees, Redeemed Christian Bible College, who spoke on “The Route” to Greatness and nested his discourse on Mark 3:13 and Luke 2:40 emphasised that discovering of purpose, preparation, focus, wisdom manifestation and divine approval, among others, are critical to true greatness. According to him “Every one who discovered purpose in the Bible, got a mission statement, not a title or rank”.
Also ministering at the summit on the topic “Mistakes that Leaders Make” Joseph Tunmida, President of Rehoboth Ministries Lagos, who used 2Kings 5:1-14 as his key scripture brought to the fore the opportunities for greatness open to all who can key into the principles of leadership. Unfortunately, he lamented, many potentially great leaders have allowed, corruption, indiscipline and carnality to rob them of awesome greatness.
Other ministers, discussants and speakers at the summit include Pastors Oluseyi Alakija, and Emmanuel Adepoju, Drs. Odunayo Arogundade and Onanaye, Ademola Adedeji, G.G. Daramola, Meshack Edevo, Bada Tolulope, Jimi Folasade and Christian Raji and Brother Ayo. The summit which was characterized by drama sketches, special choir renditions and interactive session attracted heads of ministries, pastors and other participants from Ibadan, Ogere, Lagos, the Redeemed Christian Bible college community, staff and student-leaders of the Redeemer’s University.
The bi-annual conference which was moderated by the Presiding Pastor of the Truth Assembly, Ibadan, Pastor Debo Odewumi came to a close with an impartation session and final declaration by the Chaplain of the Redeemer’s University Pastor Olugbenga Akosile and the facilitator of the event, Dr. Mark O. Ighile.
Bro. Olowookere, of the Post Graduate School, University of Ibadan, is Associate Editor, LeaderSpeak Magazine, Scripture Communication Network.

INTRODUCING THE MAY 11 2013 LEADERSHIP SUMMIT: LEADERSHIP PATHWAY TO GREATNESS

BY MARK & SHARON IGHILE

The word pathway has several semantic, thematic and structural implications. The most obvious is that of a path and way. For us who are students of the Bible, these lexical items are strikingly relevant. And three scriptures readily come to mind. First is Proverbs 4:18: “The path of the just is as a shinning light that shines more and more unto the perfect day”. The second is in Genesis 24:27: “…I being on the way, God led me”. The third is in Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof is the ways of death”.
Some lessons can be learnt from the Bible verses cited above. For example, while the path or the way is a general tool for everyone and a constituent of a means to an end, what ultimately determines destination is a different matter altogether. Secondly, those who usually receive help from God are those who please him and believe in his ability to render such assistance.
Bringing the above theoretical framework to our present discourse, Leadership Pathway to Greatness, some posers naturally come to the fore: What brand of greatness are we talking about here? Why do some leaders end up small in spite of laborious displays? What price must a leader pay to get the reward of greatness? What eventually takes you to the top even when you have played well your part?
Greatness is a mystery. This is because; a truly great person is made by God. In other words, it is the Lord Almighty who can empower an individual to become wealthy. When God makes someone great, he gives him the enablement to be a blessing to others. (Gen 12: 2). Moreover, it is only God that can bless without strings attached. The Bible says that it is the blessings of the Lord that make rich and add no sorrow (Proverbs 10:22)
While it lies within the purview of God to make one great, there is also the part of responsibility on the side of the individual. Before we consider some of the steps that a student of greatness should take, let us reflect for a moment on the mistakes that leaders make. Understanding such pitfalls and avoiding them are great strides in wisdom. They range from indiscipline, character-crisis, competitive spirit, impatience to disorderliness, covetousness and plastic immorality.
The leader who wants to be great must follow the manual of the Master. In the college of greatness, only the obedient, focused, hardworking, spirit-filled, prayerful and faithful ones get to the top. You don’t do it as you feel; you do it as it is instructed. Those who do not have goals never score any in the affairs of life. Hard work does not kill, it only refines. All the covenant fathers in the Bible were hard workers, who will you resemble, being pathologically lazy? Even Jesus is a master example in this regard (John 9:4).
At the zenith of greatness- propellers is grace. And the reason for this is not far to seek. It is not your strength that does it, neither is it your skill. It is God. It is grace that lubricates your efforts and turns them into outstanding success. It is grace that makes the results of a day’s labour supersede that of a decade. It is grace that makes you glow in glory instead of being a professional story-teller. It is grace that makes the difference.
This May 2013 summit is specially packaged for a strategic flight to a new phase, via the instrumentality of grace. This summit, which is symbolic of our five years in ministry, is grace-laden. Where grace operates, disgrace is permanently damaged. Where grace speaks, favour swings into action. As you celebrate with us God’s faithfulness in our training, manpower development and publishing ministry, otherwise known as Scripture Communication Network & Strategic Leadership Academy, may you receive grace this season for a sustainable destination in greatness.
See you on TOP.
